Description : Armed, deciduous tree to 8 m; spines leaf-bearing. Leaves opposite decussate, dimorphic, of lower branches ovate, 1.5-2.5 x 0.8-1.5 cm, of upper branches 4-9 x 2-5 cm, thick-chartaceous, hispid above, hirsute below, base attenuate, apex acute-apiculate; lateral nerves 8-10, (sub)sessile; stipules intrapetiolar, connate into a sheath. Flowers 5-merous, pedicellate, solitary or in lax cymes, white turning yellow with age; bracteoles lanceolate, free or connate. Calyx ± urceolate, 1.5 cm; lobes 5, triangular, valvate, 1.5 mm. Corolla 5 cm across, salver-form; tube 1.5 cm; lobes 5, obovate, imbricate or twisted to left in bud, 1.5 x 1.5 cm, thin-fleshy. Stamens 5, subsessile, inserted at the throat, between the lobes, included, 6 mm. Ovary turgid, 1 cm, 1-locular; placentae 5; style erect, 0.8 cm; stigma branched, 0.8 cm. Berry globose, turgid, 5 x 4 cm; seeds many, embedded in fleshy pulp; testa smooth.

Fruits: eaten after cooking, used against eye ailments of cattles, pulp pounded and applied to forehead in fever, used as lep in abdominal colic, also used in affections of mammary glands. Plant: various plant parts used in fever, epilepsy, pimples, tubercular fistula, ringworm, haemat, cholera, smallpox, dysen., neuraligia, pleur., pneum., snake bite etc.
