| Description : | Amphibious annual herbs. Leaves dimorphic; submerged leaves deeply dissected with flattened or capillary lobes; upper leaves decussate to whorled, variously dissected, 5-15 x 4-6 mm, linear-lanceolate, base cuneate, margin serrulate, apex acute, basally 3-nerved, chartaceous, subsessile. Flowers solitary, axillary; pedicels to 1 cm long. Calyx membraneous, c. 5 mm long, lobes as long as the tube, linear-lanceolate. Corolla 8-10 mm long, tube white, mouth yellow with purple shades, lobes orbicular. Stamens 4. Ovary c. 1.5 mm long, ellipsoid. Capsule c. 3 mm long, ellipsoid or sub-globose. Seeds angular, small, numerous, black. | |||||||||||||
| Curated Medicinal Use / Activity : | The plant is anti-septic, febrifuge. An infusion of the leaves is used in the treatment of dysentery, Diarrhea and dyspepsia. The juice of the plant, combined with cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) and other aromatic plants, is used in the treatment of dysentery. The juice of the plant is rubbed on the body as a remedy for strong fevers. A liniment is made from the plant, combined with coconut oil, and is used in elephantiasi. | |||||||||||||
